Mindful interoceptive mapping: Elucidating a novel mechanism for treating opioid misuse and chronic pain
Background
Chronic pain patients often struggle with managing their symptoms. Such pain can be debilitating, causing patients to become dependent on opioids or other pharmaceutical treatments for relief. As such, there is a definite need for effective, non-addictive strategies for managing chronic pain. Current research indicates that mindfulness-based interventions could be a potential solution. The Mindful Interoceptive Mapping Project focused on improving the efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions for chronic pain patients by considering which styles of mindfulness practice are most effective in promoting pleasant sensations and reducing painful sensations.
Aims
- Identify which forms of mindfulness are most effective in eliciting pleasant bodily sensations.
