Full Title
Physical Therapy Integrated with Mindfulness for Patients with Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain and Long-Term Opioid Treatment
Background
Many patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain have difficulty managing their pain, with around 20 to 30 percent of these patients depending on opioids for relief. As long-term opioid treatments are becoming increasingly common among patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain, these patients are facing an increased risk of opioid abuse and death. This has led to growing demand for non-pharmacological pain management strategies among chronic musculoskeletal pain patients. Recent research indicates that both physical therapy and mindfulness practices can be effective in reducing pain for chronic musculoskeletal pain patients. This project aims to assess the feasibility and efficacy of a mindfulness-based intervention integrated with physical therapy for reducing pain and opioid use among chronic musculoskeletal pain patients.
Aims
- Develop and refine a treatment protocol for physical therapy integrated with mindfulness for chronic musculoskeletal pain patients with long-term opioid treatment.
- Assess the efficacy of physical therapist training programs with varying levels of intensity in preparing physical therapists to competently deliver the treatment.
- Evaluate the feasibility of an intervention involving physical therapy integrated with mindfulness for chronic musculoskeletal pain patients with long-term opioid treatment.
